Vocational Habilitation

Vocational Habilitation is a service that provides learning and work experiences, including volunteer opportunities, to help individuals develop the basic skills needed to move toward integrated community employment in a job that matches their interests, strengths, priorities, and abilities.

Vocational Habilitation can help individuals learn:

  • Effective and appropriate communication with supervisors, coworkers, customers, and others in the workplace
  • Appropriate workplace conduct, dress, and safety practices
  • Critical thinking skills and workplace strategies
  • Self-advocacy and responsibility at work
  • How to select, schedule, and use transportation to and from work
  • How to advance along the path toward community employment

Additional Supporting Information

Vocational Habilitation services may be available based on an understanding of each person’s needs, identified during an assessment.

This service is not intended for long-term job support. Instead, it is designed to support individuals while they are learning general work skills that will help them obtain employment in the community. Activities are developed to support the employment outcomes identified in the person’s individual service plan.

Services are expected to occur over a defined period of time, with specific outcomes determined collaboratively by the individual and their support team.

Vocational Habilitation services may include:

  • Ongoing support
  • Information and referral to Career Planning services
  • Guidance regarding disability benefits
  • Access to other appropriate community resources and services

Ongoing Support Activities May Include

  • Direct supervision
  • Virtual support and in-person monitoring

  • Creating transition plans to move toward competitive integrated employment
  • Supporting and training individuals to use transportation services, public transit, or other community transportation resources
  • Assisting individuals in using natural supports and community resources
  • Providing training to strengthen problem-solving abilities and meet workplace expectations
  • Assisting with medication administration or performing health-related activities while working

R&R’s Unique Approach to Vocational Training: Gaming for Growth

At R&R Healthcare, we believe growth happens when individuals are engaged through activities connected to their interests and strengths. Our “Gaming for Growth” initiative uses gaming as a tool to help individuals build real-world vocational and life skills in a structured, supportive environment.

Gaming can strengthen communication, teamwork, focus, problem-solving, emotional regulation, time management, goal setting, and workplace readiness. Participants also engage in hands-on activities like arts and crafts, sensory projects, painting, design work, and collaborative group activities that encourage confidence and independence.

Our program also supports practical life and soft-skill development, including hygiene, communication, safety awareness, money management, social interaction, workplace conduct, and daily living skills.

For some individuals, gaming can also help uncover interests that may lead to future opportunities in areas such as technology support, digital design, retail, inventory work, data entry, and content moderation.

Most importantly, Gaming for Growth creates an encouraging environment where individuals can develop confidence, independence, community involvement, and skills that support future employment and everyday success.
